EDUCATION

As in 2012, this walk is in support of Christian Aid's work in improving education for children and young people in poor countries of the world. This work is managed and carried out by local agencies, with financial support from Christian Aid. So the money that we raise in the UK pays directly for the provision of classrooms, for the production of books, for the recruitment and training of teachers, for the development of learning programmes and for the materials that children and youg people will use.

Education is one of the most prized achievements of any society. It is the route by which individuals discover and develop their talents and realise their aspirations. It is the means by which countries develop their economies and people climb out of poverty. It is always a key component of the rebuilding of hope following natural or human disaster. Few things represent a stronger investment in the future but the costs are high and there is no quick fix.

All the money raised from this walk will be devoted to education projects supported by Christian Aid. Click below to see two examples of such projects - these are typical of those to which money from this walk will be devoted.

The problems in Sudan are typical of thoses faced by a strife-torn country, Click below for information about steps that can be taken to improve the education of children in this extremely poor country.

Sierra Leone was beginning to recover from a long and bloody civil war when it was hit by the Ebola crisis. Education and training institutions shut down and young people haven't been able to get the training they need to enable them to get work. Click below to see what can be done to  help.

These, then, are the sorts of need that I'm walking for, hoping to raise money to give significant support to projects such as those in Sudan and Sierra Leone. Follow my progress by reading my blog and please add your comments as I go along. And, if you can, please make a donation (click on DONATE in the top menu) - even the smallest amount will help children and young people to  fulfil their promise and their hopes.
